Volunteer with Art Smart

Art Smart is an art enrichment program sponsored by the PTSA and made possible by classroom volunteers.  Art Smart docents visit the classrooms monthly and introduce students to a range of art related topics while giving them a chance to create their own masterpieces.  The time commitment for this role is about 5-6 hours per month.

An art background is not required!

Why join Art Smart?

It is a fun way to get involved with your child’s class and get to know the teacher and students.

What does a docent do?

Once a month, volunteers (Art Smart docents) lead a 10-15-minute discussion on an artist or art topic.  The remaining class time is spent working with students on a related art project.   Supplies and materials are provided.

Lesson prep and planning is dependent on the individual lesson chosen by the parent docent volunteer.  This could range from designing your own custom lesson (for the more adventurous docent) or choosing an existing lesson plan and taking 30-60 minutes to gather supplies and prep beforehand.  The lesson will take 1-2 hours of class time.  Cleanup time depends on art supplies chosen.   Mounting and displaying art will take about 2-3 hours (less if more parent hands are helping).  Additional parent volunteers are encouraged to volunteer to help with managing students, supplies, clean up and mounting of art and displaying.

Not comfortable with leading an art lesson?

We can arrange for a training partnership with an experienced docent to help new docents ease into the role.

Also, you can work as a team with another parent volunteer and be an assistant—a second pair of hands is always helpful!

Art Smart for Learning Center classes

Art Smart for Learning Center classes is an adapted art program for Dickinson’s LC students in grades K-5. Once a month, a group of art volunteers provides one-on-one guidance and assistance during art sessions. Each lesson introduces students to a different art technique and medium. This specially designed program brings art to students who might not be able to participate in the general education Art Smart lessons. 8-10 volunteers are needed for this monthly program. Volunteers are not required to have a background in special education, speech therapy, or occupational therapy although it is certainly welcomed! All that is required is patience and a heart for working with children with a range of special needs

Love art but don’t want to be a docent?
